Napoli President Calls For Barcelona Game To Be Shifted

Napoli president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has raised concerns about his club travelling to face Barcelona in the Champions League, amid a recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Spain.

The match is scheduled for August 8 at the Camp Nou.

The first leg of the last-16 tie ended 1-1 in Naples in February. The winner will advance to the quarter-finals in Lisbon, Portugal.

“I hear a lot of perplexity and fear coming from Spain and they’re acting like nothing is wrong,” De Laurentiis told reporters.

“What does it take to say, ‘Don’t go to Barcelona but rather go to Portugal, Germany or Geneva?’

“If they’ve decided to play the Champions League in Portugal and the Europa League in Germany, I think we can go to Portugal or Germany for the round of 16.

“I don’t understand why it should stay in a city that has a really critical situation.”

TRANSFER LATEST!! Chelsea Submit Offer For Barcelona Goalkeeper, Ter Stegen

Chelsea have tabled an offer for Barcelona goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, according to Cadena Ser.

Blues boss, Frank Lampard, is looking to address his goalkeeping issues this summer.

Chelsea are believed to be ready to cut their losses with Kepa Arrizabalaga, despite making him the most expensive goalkeeper in football history in August 2018.

The Stamford Bridge outfit paid £72million to Athletic Bilbao for Kepa, eclipsing the £67m Liverpool paid for Alisson Becker just a month prior.

Kepa signed a mammoth seven-year deal, but now fears he has played his final game for the club.

However, the Premier League side will face fierce competition from Bayern Munich, who are desperate to bring Ter Stegen back to his homeland, as a long term replacement for Manuel Neuer.

Other major European clubs are also keen and are monitoring the situation at the Nou Camp with Ter Stegen’s contract quickly running out.

The 28-year-old is yet to reach an agreement with Barca over an extension, although he is understood to be settled in Spain with his family.

Rudiger Speaks On His Form Ahead Of Chelsea vs Arsenal Final

Antonio Rudiger says Chelsea have achieved their goals ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup final against Arsenal but admits that he is not satisfied with his own standards on the pitch.

The Blues secured qualification for the Champions League with a win against Wolves on July 26 following a season disrupted by the global coronavirus pandemic.

However, they conceded 54 goals throughout the Premier League season – their worst total since Roman Abramovich took control at Stamford Bridge in 2003 – and are 3-0 down on aggregate in their Champions League last-16 tie against Bayern Munich.

“For me personally, first of all I do not want to give any excuses,” Rudiger says.

“It has been a tough season with everything going on. Just in the performances, there were some good games and also bad games. It has been up and down.

“Me, personally with my season, I am not that happy. But at the end of the day as a collective, we achieved our goals and this is what matters. We still have two games to go and this is what I am focused on. Everything else I will analyse myself and go on to next season.

“If I reflect on the way we had to get to this final, it was tough. The season was tough for everyone. I had injuries, the coronavirus pandemic, it was really difficult. But we are there now and we want to do everything to win that trophy.”

OFFICIAL!! Victor Osimhen Joins Napoli From Lille

The Nigerian international striker has joined the Serie A side on a big-money deal, having been linked with several top European clubs this summer

Napoli has confirmed the signing of Nigeria international forward Victor Osimhen from Lille.

The striker, who scored 18 goals in 38 appearances for the Ligue 1 side in the 2019-20 season, moves to Naples in a deal reported to be worth €50 million (£45m/$59m).

Osimhen had been linked with several top European clubs following his impressive goalscoring season, including Arsenal and Liverpool, although he will appear in Serie A in the 2020-21 campaign.

The 10 times-capped Nigerian forward – who has scored four goals for his country – first moved to Europe in 2017 with Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, before moving to Charleroi in Belgium, initially on loan and then in a permanent transfer.

He was hugely impressive in Belgium as he managed 36 goals in 37 appearances, earning him a €14m (£13m/$17m) move to Ligue 1, where his impressive scoring form continued.

Osimhen will spearhead Napoli’s attack next season as they look to return to the Champions League having missed out this year. The Neapolitan side will finish only seventh in Serie A, although they have guaranteed qualification for the Europa League group stage by winning the Coppa Italia.

Big things are expected of the highly-rated 21-year-old, with Osimhen capable of making a similar impact at Napoli as Diego Maradona once did, according to the head of Nigerian football, Amaju Pinnick.

Pinnick told Radio Kiss Kiss last week: “I think Victor Osimhen is an excellent signing for Napoli. I’ve followed them from when they had Maradona. Naples is a proud city and also in football terms.

“Osimhen is a source of pride for African football. He’s someone who is disciplined but focused on objectives, and if he wants something, he knows how to get it. He made the right decision for his career. I already believe he’ll receive the right support from the club and its fans.

“Napoli are the right club for him to achieve important results, and Osimhen will always give his best. I’ll say it now: Victor will do everything possible to match and even break the records set by a legend like Maradona.

“I talked to Victor just a few minutes ago, he’s very excited about his new experience and new club. Napoli is a big name in world football. It’ll be a new challenge for him and he told me: ‘President, I’ll make Naples proud’.

“If he gets the right support, I guarantee he’ll stick to his word and make you all proud. Believe in him and he’ll help the team achieve their objectives. I’ll come to Naples next season to watch some of their games. Osimhen is young and could stay at Napoli for a long time.”

General Council Agrees Guidelines For Final Stage Of DG Selection

During July and August, the candidates are engaging in the campaign stage of the process in order to “make themselves known to (WTO) Members”.

Following the campaign period, which runs until 7 September, the final phase of the process will commence. During this third phase, the General Council will seek to narrow the field of candidates through consultations led by Amb. Walker. The objective is to choose a candidate by a consensus of all WTO members.

The decision taken on 31 July pertains to the so-called Phase 3 of the DG selection process. Amb. Walker explained to the members that the steps that had been agreed were in keeping with the 2002 Guidelines and with past practice, notably the 2013 process which resulted in the selection of DG Azevêdo.

Amb. Walker told WTO members that he, together with the Dispute Settlement Body Chair Dacio Castillo of Honduras and the Trade Policy Review Body Chair Harald Aspelund of Iceland, would meet individually with each WTO member between 7 and 16 September. This first round of consultations would be followed by two more, during which the field of candidates would gradually be reduced from eight to five and down to two for the final round.

In these consultations, the chair and his facilitators will ask each delegation the same question: “What are your preferences?” Delegations would be asked to produce a maximum of four preferences in the first round and a maximum of two preferences in the second round. Information obtained during these “confessional” sessions with individual members would, Amb. Walker said, “be treated in the strictest confidence” and members’ preferences would not be revealed. He reiterated that the objective was to narrow the field by identifying those candidates which were “least likely to attract consensus”.

At the end of each round of the Phase 3 consultations, Amb. Walker and the facilitators would report the outcomes to members at meetings of heads of delegations. The timetable for rounds two and three of the Phase 3 process would be similar to that of stage one, Amb. Walker said.

According to the 2002 Guidelines, the key consideration in determining which candidate is best poised to achieve consensus is the “breadth of support” each candidate receives from the members. During the DG selection process of 2005, breadth of support was defined as “the distribution of preferences across geographic regions and among the categories of members generally recognized in WTO provisions: that is (least developed countries), developing countries and developed countries”.

Amb. Walker stressed that, as outlined in the 2002 General Council decision, the process would be guided by “the best interests of the Organization, respect for the dignity of the candidates and the members nominating them and by full transparency and inclusiveness at all stages”.

The decision to extend the terms of the four Deputy Directors-General came after consultative efforts had been made to designate one of them as Acting Director-General until a new Director-General takes office. Amb.

Walker explained once again to members that choosing an Acting Director-General was “very much a housekeeping matter to facilitate the continued running of the organization” as the membership focused on choosing the new Director-General.

But consultations did not yield a consensus on which of the four should be designated as Acting Director-General, so Amb. Walker proposed instead that all four DDGs stay on and continue their existing responsibilities until such time as the new Director-General takes office. During this period, all four DDGs will consult closely with the members as represented by the General Council chair. Amb. Walker underscored that during this interim phase, no structural changes will be made to the WTO Secretariat. Amb. Walker also stated that he remained open to consult with members.

All Past, Present Corrupt Cases Will Be Probed – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday vowed to unearth all corrupt cases in Nigeria.

Buhari said all corrupt cases both past and present would be revisited.

He stated this at the Presidential Villa, Abuja and was contained in a statement forwarded to DAILY POST by his spokesman, Garba Shehu.

Buhari lamented that there has been abuse of trust by some people in both the previous and this administration.

He explained that the probe was responsible for the setting up of a commission to look into such cases of corruption.

“All past and present corrupt cases will be fully investigated.

“All of such cases will be uncovered and firmly dealt with by his government.

“This is why we put the commission (of investigation) in place. There has been abuse of trust by people trusted by the previous administration and this administration.”
